Subaru Repair: 2001 outback rear bearing, Subaru wheel bearing

Question
I have a grinding sound that is coming from the rear of the car.  I believe it to be the wheel bearing, or wheel hub. I am wondering if this is a common problem?  Is there any way of confirming this without taking the entire wheel assemble apart to confirm my suspicions.  Also,  would this be a job that can be done by an amateur with fairly good mechanical skill or do I leave it to the pros.

Answer
Hey Peter,

The wheel bearing and possible hub is not really a do it your self repair.

It involves special tools and depending how the repair is made a stand up hydraulic press.

You could take out the knuckle and take the whole thing to a machine shop but you wouldn't be saving much.

Tough to diagnose without having all 4 wheels up in the air.
