Subaru Repair: power steering hoses, power steering pumps, subaru outback

Question
I have a slight groaning when I turn the wheel to the left in my 2000 Subaru Outback. I was told that it's the power steering hoses that need to be replaced. (I thought it was possibly a cv joint because I'd experienced that with my other Subaru).
I simply want to read a bit about the diagnostics of this problem and particularly to understand what is done when the hoses are changed. Is the fluid drained and then replaced? Is a new gasket put on the reservoir? It would help if I could find some pictures of this. I've tried to look on the internet and found this site.

Answer
To replace the hoses the power steering fluid must be drained out.  And new fluid put in. As for the diagnoses I am not sure what you are looking for diagnosing a particular problem with a mechanical system is more about a skill set than information in a manual. We don't replace to many hoses on the Subaru Outback here, are they leaking? Unless they are leaking and the diagnoses is the fluid level is low as a result of the hoses leaking than I am not sure why they would be at fault. For pictures I would suggest going to one of the repair information websites where you can purchase part or all of the service publications online for a fee. All Data & Mitchell are two such companies. But pretty simply power steering pumps will make noise when turning if they are low on fluid, the fluid is aerated, or the pump has a noisy bearing.
And that is pretty much it

Hope that helps
