Answer
Hello John,

Sorry it has taken so long to respond, I had answered the question and thought that that i had hit submit before i shut the computer off but I guess not.

Anyway to your question,

A check engine light can come on for many reasons,  there hundreds of possible fault codes, and possible problems.  There are also quite a few things that can be common to the 2000 model year.  Being that it is a Liberty I assume you are in Australia? And the emissions systems may be different than I have seen in the states and I don't want to give you inaccurate advice.  Common issues would include the Knock sensor, the front 02 sensor (air fuel sensor) and cylinder misfires from a corroded coil pack or ignition wires as well as the possibility of plug well seals leaking oil onto the spark plug wires.

But having said all that, if the performance of the engine is in question and you have a check engine light on. You need to at a minimum have the vehicle scanned for codes and start with that information. I hope I have helped.
