Subaru Repair: Keyless Entry Remote, dear frank, remot

Question
Dear Frank,
I have a 1999 Outback with security system.  The key remot only works intermittently.  I have two remotes and they are both working marginally.  I have replaced batteries and tried the reset by pressing unlock 6 times.  This works for 1-2 times and then goes intermittent again.  I don't know where the sensor is or its method of operation (IR, radio, etc).  Any way to service this system like cleaning the sensor?  Replace the remotes or sensor?
I need your help,
Thanks,
Gary Long

Answer
The remotes use UHF to transmitt to car. There isn't a sensor to clean. In most cases the battery replcaement will usually correct most problems, but it's not uncommon for the remotes to go bad themselves. You can try 1 new remote and see if that works better.
