Subaru Repair: 1997 Subaru Legacy AT, subaru legacy, shift lock

Question
The tranny is stuck in park.  There is a button on the shifter that one must depress to move the handle out of park.  I cannot depress that button at all.  When I try, it sounds like there's a relay clicking in the steering column (the shifter is on a center console, not the steering column), but I cannot depress that button to move the gearshift from park to reverse.  Thanks for any hints about why this might be happening and what I can do about it.

Answer
The sound you are hearing is the shift lock control module clicking. The switch and module are working but the interlock solenoid is not. That is what is located by the shifter handle. The only option is to replace the solenoid or to have it replaced. I would contact a local shop and inquire how much it would cost for that repair.
