Subaru Repair: timebelt chnge., water pump bearing, added stress

Question
My question is more general.  I've always had my water pump changed along with my timing belt because that is what I've been told to do by professionals.  Is that practice of changing the water pump today really necessary anymore?  Have there been improvements in water pump reliability where this practice is obsolete and I can continue safely and long term on my oem water pump?

Thanks,
DW

Answer
The added stress of a new, tighter timing belt on the water pump bearing can leave a very bad taste in your mouth if you have to go back in 6 months later and re-du the whole job.Water pumps get worse every year and not better companies are always looking for ways to make the same part cheaper.Remember it is NOT in the manufactures best interest to make parts that last forever.
