Tips on Buying Cars: Newer used car, pre owned vehicle, car lots

Question
Help!
My son's dependable old 2002 Taurus was written off in a hailstorm. He got a good settlement, and I suggested he use it as a downpayment on a newer pre-owned vehicle.
I am researching for him as he woeks full time and attends classes in the evening and I have more spare time.
I have had good luck with cars at the major dealers (they are all her where we live) but not so good at the road side used car lots. Also you can shop online by entering your price range, etc.
Can you give me some suggestions?
He is thinking standard transmission, and other than that something good on gas and with few maintenance problems. Lets say 2005 and up.
Thanks so much!

Answer
Bud:In the past,I have suggested to at look at certified pre-owned.Unless you have a budget, consider this option. Most vehicles with automatics offer the same or better on gas than manuals.

Also certified pre-owned offer warranty, perhaps lower miles.Very often a low cost and high mile vehicle can end up costing YOU money in the end because of maintance costs.
I suggest that a Honda,Toyota,Ford,or Chevy offers several choices in your search.Good luck on your search.Don
