Subaru Repair: Outback randomly wont start-no power, neutral safety switch, subaru outback

Question
I have a 2003 Subaru Outback Wagon. Sometimes,, when I get in the car to
start it, it won't start. There is no power. All the digital readings such as miles
etc. are erased. I once had a tow truck come out to tow the car and the driver
said that he thought the problem was the neutral safety switch. He popped
open a little tab to the upper right of the gear shift, stuck a key into the hole,
put the car in neutral and the car started. When I took the car to the dealer,
they said they could not find a problem and that they could only figure out
what the problem was if the car was acting up while it was in their possession
(which of course did not happen while they had it-It would always start). What
exactly is the problem here ?  It's definitely not the battery.

Answer
I cant tell you the exact problem without Diagnosing it my self. But some of the usual suspects would include the inhibitor switch, starter contacts, faulty micro switch. The only thing that bothers me is the digital readings erase as none of the above would effect the entire primary circuit of the car.Unless you are stating that at the instant you try to start the car the readings momentarily dissapear. This woul lead me back to testing the above mentioned componets.
