Subaru Repair: Used Subaru purchase, head gaskets, headgaskets

Question
I am considering purchasing a used Subaru in the 1996 to 2000 range. I like the Outback but have heard that there are a large number of them with major problems with head gaskets. I understand the problem is with the 2.5 liter engine and that all of the Outbacks  during these years have this engine (all of the ones that I've seen advertised have it). Approximately what percentage of these Outbacks have the problem? Is it like 75% or more like 10? Should I avoid buying this model? Are there certain years to avoid? Thanks for any advise that you can give me in making a purchase.

Answer
Sorry it has taken so long to respond.Any ways here is the deal.Subaru has had headgasket issues. But the reality is that its a inherit issue with a horizontily opposed engine. That being said the all wheel drive aspect and increased ground clearence would suffer if Subaru built a inline or v6 engine.I have owned over 20 Subarus through the years and  ive done headgaskets to most of them. But Subaru is the only car i would ever let my wife drive my kids in.Yes Subaru has had headgasket issues, but every car out there has some type of pattern failure. In your search to find an Outback try to either find one that has had the headgaskets replaced already as the updated gaskets are superior.Or find one that needs the headgaskets done and the price reflects that.Personally i feel that once the headgaskets are done you will have a great car.One that is safe and reliable and flat out will go in the snow better than the rest.
