Subaru Repair: Abnormal gear shifting/stalling, subaru impreza, matt snyder

Question
Hello! I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5L RS Auto trans. Two things for starters... First I have noticed that over the past several months my car seems to get about 50 miles less per tank of gas. Second, when I lay into the throttle the car makes sort of a whining sound (almost like a jet engine) as it accelerates. At about the same time I noticed these two things, I was driving on the highway at about 80mph and pushed the gas peddle to the floor. The car acted like it wanted to down-shift into 3rd gear but couldn't. (To better describe how it felt, it seemed as though the car was in neutral, a belt was slipping, or a gear was shredded off.) Then, as I eased off the gas peddle it seemed to grab and resumed accelerating. At first I thought this happened because I floored it at a high speed, but then realized it didn't matter how fast I was going. Even from a dead stop, or anywhere in between, the car behaves the same way. As long as I don’t press the throttle down more than ¾ of the way the car drives fine. Also, while in park, the car will stall if the gas peddle is pressed to the floor for more than two seconds. Any ideas? Thanks a lot! Matt Snyder.

Answer
Ok first of all the car has a rev limiter that shuts off the fuel injectors and ignition system if you floor it in park or neutral and that is why it tries to stall. But as far as the rest my first guess to all is a restricted fuel filter.@2nd would be a faulty t.p.s. or 02 sensor. But having said that the car should really be diagnosed by someone who Knows Subaru. If you want to try something your self try the fuel filter just make sure you follow the proper procedure for releiving fuel pressure and also don't damage the fuel lines
