Suzuki Repair: Tow a Sidekick, rear differential, fuel mileage

Question
Thanks for your quick response.  Can you please explain what you mean by "leave the front hubs out(free)".  This is a manual transmission.  Fogive me for being ignorant.
Thanks Again,

Hi there David,
I have a 1989 Suzuki Sidekick 4x4.  Can I tow this behind my RV without using a trailer or dolly? I know this question is right up your alley!
Thanks,
Gene M.

If it has a manual transmission, yes, leave the front hubs out(free), and the trans in neutral.  If it has an automatic, you can just unbolt the flange at the rear differential, and tie it up out of the way, while still making sure the front hubs are disengaged.  It's easy to slide underneath it, and less than a half hour to bolt or unbolt the driveshaft.  I've been told it follows better without the dolly.  I've no tow experience myself, I'm one of the tent brigade.

Answer
No problem.  I believe the words on the hub are "in" and "out".  In engagement, and out of engagement. When they are in, the axle and driveshaft turn when the wheel does.  Basically, even though it won't hurt the front differential to tow it when engaged, I'm not sure the same is true of the transfer case, besides, why have all that extra stuff turning?  It's just extra drag, and poorer fuel mileage.
