Towing Issues: Light requirements with tow dolly, tow dolly, rv towing

Question
Hi,

We are looking into purchasing a used tow dolly to tow a vehicle behind our RV. I am unclear on a few things about dollies. First, the ad states includes lights, does this mean the dolly itself has lights or lights to make the tow vehicles brakes and turn signals work. If the lights are just for the dolly how does one get the lights for the brakes and turn signals to work? I imagine something needs to plug into the RV but what and how? are there extra parts or a kit we need to get? What questions do I ask to make sure I purchase the right thing?

Any help is appreciated.

Answer
Well while RV towing issues are not my real area of expertise, I can tell you that a tow dolly will have lights which are mounted on the fenders of the vehicle (think of the UHaul dollies you see all the time) and they plug into a wiring connection on the back of the tow vehicle (be it an RV or pickup)

I hope your RV has a trailer hitch assembly also which will allow you to tow the dolly behind it.. Somewhere around that is usually a small plug assembly with provides the power for the tow dolly lights..

I hope this helps a bit...
