Towing Issues: Towed after blocking a private residences driveway, legal answer, towing company

Question
Hi Richard, thanks in advance for taking the time to answer this.  I parked such that I partially obstructed a private residence's driveway, and was towed that night, sometime between 8:30pm and 8:00am.  There were no signs giving a towing company's information when I parked, but after the tow, there was.  What my question is, is under what circumstances is a tow like that legal?

Answer
Well since I am lacking a bit of information I will give a "GENERAL ANSWER" here...

First of all without knowing if the driveway was in a parking lot or on the street, I would guess you were in a parking lot and as such the problem is common..

Tow signs "GENERALLY" have to be posted by either City or State law and have some specific requirements.. But like any thing else the signs do get stolen, vandalized, or the weather damages them.. Some places are good about knowing and replacing the signs and some do not know about them till they have to tow the vehicle..

Since I was not there and do not know what happened I am going to say that the sign was replaced due to either it being missing or damaged.

Now like I said before there are many state laws which would help in answering this question if I had the information I ask for at the beginning where you ask questions...

But since the vehicle was blocking a driveway then it sounds to me like a legal impound..

I am sorry that I failed "MIND READING 101" but my knowledge is quite good on towing issues, but I can not tell you specific answers on legal issues as the laws in California are different than the laws in Alabama, Nevada, North Dakota or New York City when dealing with towing..

your comment "What my question is, is under what circumstances is a tow like that legal?" asks me to make a "LEGAL ANSWER" and I did.. You blocked a driveway and it is illegal to do that in EVERY STATE...

Is it legal to tow it, YES...

Sorry again for not having SPECIFIC ANSWERS, but I tried to do the best I could with what information I have on this "VOLUNTEER BOARD"
