Towing Issues: Ford Explorer RWD, tow dolly, shift location

Question
Can I tow a 2000 RWD Ford Explorer backwards on a tow dolly? and if so what is the procedure as far gear shift location is concerned. Finally do I have to tie down the steering wheel to stop the front wheels from swiveling around?

Yes, you MUST tie down the steering wheel if towing in this manner.  And still if the sterring is worn or loose, you can still have problems.  Check with the rental company about if this is allowed or possible.  I prefer a full trailer for the safest towing if at all possible.
