Towing Issues: overcharged, small utility trailer, dmv office

Question
I recently was towed while inside the DMV from a parking lot right next door that was empty. There was a sign posted but very difficult to see. While waiting to be picked up, I watch this company tow 3 more cars and trucks out of the parking lot. This is an obvious scam for when we went to pick up the truck, which they had less than an hour they charged $225.00 per vehicle. Since I was there with a small utility trailer on the back, the bill came to $450.00. Is there any way I can turn these people in and get my money back or at least a partial refund, without paying more money for a lawyer? Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Carole

Answer
Well lets look at this question close..

You went to DMV, and they have a parking lot for their customers correct ?

You parked in a lot which was next door and empty, Correct ?

YOU WERE TRESPASSING on private property, plan and simple.
Now the sign which was very hard to see, generally there are signs at the entrances to the property and some though out the property.. Now depending on the city and state you are in (Once again someone forgot to mention this IMPORTANT ISSUE ) you have rules and regulations regarding sign posting requirements, how long vehicles have to be there before they get towed, if the property owner - manager has to be present to have vehicles removed, or if it can be patrolled for illegal parking violators (see how important this it to the correct answer)...

Now as to the 3 other vehicles which you watched being towed, then this a problem lot for the property owner. You call it "A SCAM" but truth be told, it seems that its an ongoing problem which the property owner has been forced to take against violators.

I wonder, do you think that if you lived or owned the property next to the DMV office you would allow people to park on your property, which you pay for, pay taxes on, insure so that people can not file claims against you, that you would allow them to park there..

I doubt that would be ok with you.

As to the fees charges, that seems about right for the fees I hear about, and you having the trailer attached, they most likely had to use a 2nd tow truck to tow the trailer.  In some states its illegal to tow a truck and a trailer in combination.. Once again laws in effect..

Now if you really feel that you were wronged, you are more than welcome to take the towing company, the property owner and who ever else you think would be responsible for having your vehicle towed and you having to pay for the service rendered to Small Claims court... Sure it will cost a bit of money and time, but that is the RIGHTS YOU HAVE UNDER THE LAW, but remember that you did break the law also and while some judges might side for you, you do stand a big chance of losing....
