Towing Issues: towing an old vw beetle with a dolly, wheel drive cars, vw transaxle

I need to tow an old bug (rear engine, rear drive) with manual transmission
behind a 1995 nissan pathfinder.  I understand dollies are for front wheel drive
cars?  My pathfinder would be over the weight limit if I used a car carrier.  What
are the risks, if any, of towing the car in this manner (while in neutral, of
course)?  Could I damage the car going 55mph for about 300 miles?

Check with the rental company if you can tow with the rear wheels on the dolly (and the steering wheel securely tied so it can't move.

I am not sure what damage would happen to the VW if towed in neutral.  Some of the tranny would be moving probably and it might not get good lubrication.  You should check with someone that knows more about the Vw Transaxle than I do.
