Towing Issues: towing a four wheel drive 2000 dodge ram 1500, dodge ram 1500, automatic transmision

Is it possible to damage the automatic transmision towing it on a tow dolly with the rear wheels on the ground. my son and i towed his truck about 100 miles and when we got home it started to smoke and shift hard making a noise when it does shift and he doesn't think its shifting through all the gears, it's a four wheeler should we have disconnected the drive shafts?

well  aahhhh hate to say this, but I am suprised that you managed to get 100 miles.

the transmission  ratings are suggested at 0 mph and 0 miles for BOTH STICK AND STANDARD for the 4 wheel drive...

Chances are that you have serious damage to the vehicles transmission..

Hind sight is wonderful.. Driveline should of been removed, that or the vehicle moved on a flatbed trailer..
