Toyota Repair: Water Pump Replacement - 2005 Toyota Camry 2.4L 4 Cylinder, water pump replacement, 2005 toyota camry

Question
QUESTION: What is the typical cost to replace a water pump on a 2005 Toyota Camry (2.4L 4 cylinder)?  I have received one estimate of over $540 which seems high since this year and model Camry with the 4 cylinder engine uses a timing chain rather than a timing belt.  The estimate includes the price for the water pump, coolant, sealer and labor (labor portion of estimate is $330).  Also, should the thermostat along with any other components be replaced with the water pump?  If so, why and what would be the additional cost?  Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: It does seem a little high, who is giving you this quote? If it's the toyota dealer it seems about right, they get 3.0 hours labor aqt about $98.00 per hour.

QUESTION: Yes, that quote is from a dealer.  What should the usual cost be at a non dealer shop?  Also, should the thermostat along with any other components be replaced with the water pump?  If so, why and what would be the additional cost?  Thanks again for your help.

Answer
Most of the time it's a good diea to replace the thermostat when doing any cooling system repairs, there is usually no additional labor to do this when replacing the water pump. You may be able to save about $100 by going to an independent repair shop. They are more flexible and you can negotiate with them a little.
