Toyota Repair: 1992 toyota camary, many different things, 10 mins

I bought a new battery 5 months ago.  It was raining heavily today and I had been driving for about 10 mins in the rain.  I turned a corner slowly to stop a friends house. the check engine light came on and it felt like the car was going to die.  I gunned the engine a little as I waited for the friend to exit the car.  I drove home, 1 and 1/2 blocks.  I parked the car in the garage.  I went to start it about 2 hours later and it will not start.  It acts like it will, but not.  I have power because the lights are bright.
I just don't want to be told that it will cost $1000 if I don't have some idea of what it might be.

That type of symptom can be caused by many different things. The good news is that since the check light is illuminated, you will need to pull the diganostic codes from the ECU and that will supply you with the problem area or circuit. I cannot pin point a problem until this is performed.
