Toyota Repair: cat converter, toyota corolla 2002, emission control system

I have a Toyota corolla 2002.last week there was a engine light.i ask my dealer & he told me cat convertor degraded.he ask  to change cat convertor with  $2000.please tell me if i will not change this cat convertor what's problem cause.my car is running smoothly.only engine light at desk board.

Check with a muffler shop for a price on replacing the converter, it will be much cheaper, the cat converter is part of the emission control system and should be repaired,if not replaced it will not really cause any other problems for a while but it can affect engine performance after a while and if there are annual inspections or emission control inspections where you live it will not pass.
