Question -
1985 toyato supra 2.8 6 cyl  car running fine just went dead no spark at plugs  new coil  how can i tell if the distributor is bad or the ignitor

Answer -
First check the timing belt it may have slipped or broken, remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor turns when the engine is cranked over, if not the timing belt needs to be checked, remove the top half of the timing cover for inspection.

Answer
It could be either the distributor or the igniter, there is no way to check the igniter and checking the distributor involves taking resistance measurements requiring a shop manual I can not get into that here it is too involved. Try the substitution method, aquire a used igniter from a salvage yard and see if it works if not replace the distributor, these parts are inexpensive on the used market.
