Toyota Repair: 1993 LS400 went DEAD driving...No Battery Charge!, ls400, good connections

Question
I have a 1993 LS400 and it went totally dead within seconds of the battery charge light coming on, it was night time the lights were on and the radio was playing..and then all power went and the engine died!! AAA tow truck came and jumped the car and it started right up but it was smoking under the steering pump and smell was not good.. thinks I fried the alternator! but would the battery die in seconds?...and cause the engine to die!!! I thought a dead alternator would still give you a few miles on the battery to pull over safely! Where can I get instruction to replace the Alternator? I think it should be an easy job!

Answer
make sure you have good connections and didnt fry a battery cable or a wire.
Test the battery first. Cant check charging with a bad battery.
Then check charging system 12.8-14.2 is normal with a good battery.
If you cange the alt. you dont really need instruction. old out new in.
Tighten belt till you can twist the belt 90 degrees , no more, by hand.
