Toyota Repair: 1985 toyota 4Runner horn problem, toyota 4runner, fuse box

Question
mike, good evening...

i have a 4 cylinder 85 4runner toyota...nearly 200K miles...over time the horn was sounding very anemic...and now it will not sound at all.  Can you help me identify the problem...

I checked the fuse under the hood in the fuse box..a 10 amp..it looks good - swapped it with another 10 amp that does the lights..the lights worked so i can believe the fuse is good...

I pulled the grill...took off the horn...cleaned up the small screw that is behind it and actually put wire on the horn leads and hooked them to the battery...the horn blasted louder than ever...

I pulled the steering wheel cover, and the mechanism under the cushion that engages the horn seems to be very free and clear, but there is no noise coming from the horn, no click, no nothing.

So now I am thinking I have a relay or some electrical problem...and do not know where to look for the next step...

Are there relays under the hood...or in the steering column - can you tell me where i might look next....

i went to a fuse box to the left of the drivers feet position, took out the panel and checked those fuses....none said horn...all appeared to be good....

I looked in my toyota book...no mention of horns...

Can you help me with some other actions i can take before i have to take it to the dealer....

Many thanks, in advance

God Bless you ....

Tim

Answer
Sounds like the horn pin is worn out.
There is a brass pin in the turn signal assembly. It rides on a brass plate thats on the back of the wheel. If it gets worn down enough you loose contact.
Try turning the wheel as you hit the horn. If she toots then its the horn pin.
You can but a horn pin. There is a company that used to make a cap to put over it as a quick fix. Dont remember where I got it though. 1985 was 20 yrs ago LOL
