Toyota Repair: 1992 Toyota 4-runner timing belt., toyota 4 runner, valve train

Question
Hello Ted.
I own a 1992 4-runner with the 3 liter v-6. I was on a long trip from Indianapolis to Salt Lake City and it died on me last night while pulling a trailer. It has 163,000 miles on it and ran great. I had it towed to the dealer and it was discovered that my timing belt had broken. I heard no knocks or rattles or other noises. I just coasted to a stop. I am concerned I may have damaged the valve train. How loud of a noise would it have made if the piston hit a valve. Is there any way of telling or testing? Is the previous even possible on this engine? I know some have enough clearance. Thanks for your help in easing my mind. The truck is at a dealer in the middle of illinios until parts come monday.

Answer
I have good news, there is no way that the valves can be damaged, or for that matter, anything else on the engine if the timing belt breaks, just have it replaced and the next time don't wait so long to check it or replace it, the factory recommends replacement every 60,000 miles.
