Toyota Repair: Driver side door, good luck jack, toyota corolla

Jack,
    My problem is that my driver side door is locked, and will not open.  The lock seems to be stuck: when I use the auto locks I can't even help the lock into the open position. Do you have any hints on how I can open the door? Because everything I have read up to this point starts with the understanding that the door is already open.
p.s. '99 Toyota corolla,1 owner, regular mait.

That is the problem.
No car maker designs the door to be repaired unless it is open.  Getting it open is the trick without causing damage to the interior.
I don't suggest you try unless you have some experience in doing this, which by your question, you don't.
The best place is the dealership and they will caution you that there may be some damage getting the door panel off and the door open.
I can't tell you what they will find since you could have a failed door lock motor, some past sins of locking the the keys in the car and the process of getting it open ruined the plastic holders for the door control rods.
Sorry I can't be any direct help but you may find that having someone else do the opening is in your best interest.
