Tractor Repair: IH 574 hydraulics, gallons per minute, maximum pressure

Question
im am working on my dads tractor & was reading some of the same problems on the forum .My question is how to flowtest the pump & what should the pressure be ?

Answer
Hello,

A repair shop will have a flow rater that they plug into the remote outlets on the back of the tractor.  It will test both the flow and pressure from the pump.  Just checking pressure alone does not tell the whole story because by the time the pump builds enough pressure, the flow can drop to almost nothing if the pump is worn out.  If the pump is good, the flow at about 1500 psi should not drop more than 10% compared to the flow with no pressure.  For example, if it flows 10 gallons per minute with no pressure, it should not go lower than 9 gallons per minute at 1500 psi. The maximum pressure should be around 2000 psi.
