Tractor Repair: Lawn Tractor, hp motor, rear wheels

Question
I have a Troy-Bilt Pony, model # 13AN779G766, 42" cut, 7 speed lawn tractor with a B&S 17.5 hp motor. When in nuetral, I can't push the mower. It acts as if the transmission is engaged (the rear wheels will not turn). Otherwise, everything works fine. Any suggestions?

HI RICK
Ok could be something simple like the actual gear lever has a faulty linkage to the gearbox. How mechanical are you do you like to get in and have a look.
As this is the part I would look at first, remove any covers that are in the way over the engine/gear box and trace the gear lever back to the start point back at the driving position. Check for any bad or sloppy connections that would make any gear change difficult, for example holes that a bolt may go through has it worn so badly that the hole is oval and not nice and round. Or do any connections /joints look as the need a grease up. All these things can make gear change difficult!
I can’t remember the drive method of all the different type of tractors there are but is this one chain driven at the back wheel –has the chain come of and jamming the sprockets?
You may need to get under the vehicle –with care –if you can lift it 45 degrees and put some block to hold it there. Have a good look for faults.
Get back to me.
