Triumph Repair: Spitfire shifting pattern, spitfire 1500, push down

I just got a 73 Spitfire 1500. Of course it needs some work but runs. Had a 70 many years ago. Having trouble finding reverse.  I also had an MG.  I remember a "slap and back" and a "push down" My question is.  What is the shifting pattern and is there a secret to reverse?

Bob i have a bunch of books and none of them say what the pattern is. but i do remember you push the whole shifter down which allows it to move past a little flat piece of metal which is keeping you from getting reverse instead another gear. im pretty sure it's push down then you will notice it comes over further try moving it up towards the dash if not that then down the other way.
