UK Car Repair: 72 MG.Midget, copper oxide, slave cylinders

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I rebuilt the slave cylinder for the clutch a year ago. It started leaking again. So i bought a new one put it on today no fun.It is leaking around the rubber boot. any ideas. Thank you Dewayne

ANSWER: hmm- pull off the boot (it slides down the pushrod, quite easily when soaked in fluid), look inside, if fluid is getting past the piston then the cylinder is no good, simple as. have someone pump the pedal, but watch out, fluid can squirt in your eye.....

Just because a part is new doesn't mean it's not broken, take it back - it's a dud if it's leaking like this...

Could have some contaminant in the seals, dirt and dust can ruin the seal and the bore of the cylinder and dust easily gets in parts left on shelves in stockrooms for years... ponder ponder..

lots of people getting old stock parts that are way past servicable... wrong size/type/broken/bent/dirty/rusty... inspect all parts when buying, compare them with your original parts and make a judgement before you leave the shop, let the man know if you think it's not quite right and ask what the policy is on parts returns if they dont fit/are wrong/dont work... can save you a lot of money in the long run with the classics, if you ask these questions they usually double check and cross reference part numbers for you... kindof proves that it needs to be done and these questions need to be asked - should put that up as general advice. lots of parts people are lazy, that's what I'm getting anyway. Demand good service for your money!

Flush your entire system, if its eating slave cylinders i bet the pressure pipe is corroded on the inside and letting bits of copper oxide get in the cylinder... did the old cylinder have green stained scoring on the inside of the bore? check it out if you still have it... fit a new pipe before replacing the cylinder - get a metal braided hose if you can, they don't corrode.
Well they dont corrode on the INSIDE... which is an improvement IMO :-)

QUESTION: Thank you, I will check it.I bought it from a well known parts company. The old slave cylinder was clean no green or staining, We also have a 1974 MGB crome bombers, it needs new springs can i use some from a 1978 Mgb, or will it make the car sit to high. Thank you very much Dewayne

Answer
hmmm, the springs - not my strong point.

One more thin gwith your slave cylinder... make sure it is positined perfectly straight, so the pushrod is allowed to move perfectly in line with the piston with no lateral stresses, that sort of thing causes premature wear.

Make sure you use the recommended fluid, i'll check the specs for you - cant remember if it's a mineral fluid or just dot3.
