UK Car Repair: mg clutch, clutch master cylinder, gearshift lever

Question
My brother has a 1973 mg midget and as of the last week has been having a problem getting it into first gear, it really scraps and grinds bad, when it's cold it go in good, but drive it a very short distance and it gets bad, had a clutch and new slave cylinder put in about a year and half ago, driven very little, maybe a few thousand miles, when able to drive it seems all the gears start to grind when trying to change,,,,, I did check the oil level in the gear box, even changed it , didn't help,,,,,,, then put on a new clutch master cylinder, no change,,,,, what is your advise ?????? it seem the clutch is letting out almost at the floor, it will even start to move forward with the clutch pressed all the way down,,,,,, is there a clutch adjustment anywhere on the model ???

Thanks for your help and advise

Steve

Answer
I take it the clutch system has been bled?

I think there is adjustment of the master pushrod on the end of the clutch pedal (lengthen this rod if possible)

Also the clutch release mechanism, where the fork pivots - has this joint become loose and slipped a few notches... it's on a bolted clamp like a motorbike's gearshift lever if I remember. or something similar.

Nothing has come loose? the clutch lever isn't on an angle, and the slave cylinder is bolted on tight?

either air in the system or some adjuster has come loose and shortened the pushrod.

good luck,

If you need better assistance, can you photo the inside of the pedal box, and the slave cylinder,
Not too close up, I need to see the whole situation.
