Hi John
Im having a problem diagosing whats happening to my car. When on a motorway and you travel at the speed limit then when you enter the slip road to slow down, the oil, alternator, omission lights come on the dash with the fuel light.the car comes to a stop with no idle, which drops below 5 thou.revs.its hard to restart and takes a while to get the revs back up,you have to keep the revs or the cars stalls again.
the mileage is 22000 and serviced last Nov 05
thankyou

It is not returning to idle, hmmmm.... has it been back to the garage yet? Many items can be causing your condition. A few stand out of the crowd. The Throttle position sensor, mass air flow sensor, Stuck Idle air control valve or you air filter might have sucked in a stray cat or wild mongoose. However, none of these items should be replaced without a diagnostics scan with data log of sensor inputs and parameter functions. In simple terms, unless Santa left you a $15,000 USD Modis Scan tool this year you're at the mercy of the local auto shop. I would bring it round and tell them "it just died!" and see what happens. Don't tell them anything else other than that and they should be fine. If they cannot figure it out call up another shop and tell them the same thing. This problem is only going to be repaired by someone who is capable of finding it. If the bill is reasonable and the car runs good after that I suggest that you keep a normal schedule of once a year general inspection with this car. The Vauxhall brand name is parented by General Motors who up until its most recent vehicles has not been known for the dependability of sensors and emissions components. Assuming that the car is well taken care of a yearly visit should be cost effective and beneficial to your relationship with this car.

Good luck to you and happy motoring.

John

Answer
Well, this is a new symptom manifestation of a problem that I have seen a lot of in these cars. The Ecotec platform used in these engines have a history of this problem on both sides of the pond. I will add you're cars symptoms to my list of possible indicators. Normally these cars just refuse to run at all and or flood the hell out of themselves when this happens, but I have never run into an instance where the car just flat out locks itself into cruse tuning and backs out the fuel pulse. As I said, it is usually the sign of a sensor issue when you get symptoms like this. I appreciate you replying with the actual diagnosis and wish others would do so as well so as to enhance my working diagnostic information.

Thank you for your question and as always, Happy Motoring.

Regards,

John
