UK Car Repair: truimph tr7 cooling fan, drive flange, alloy grades

Question
-------------------------
Followup To I went to flex-a-lite web site and got a thought.
Would it be more economical and neater to go with a s blade electric fan mounted through the core of the rad.

Question -
i was driving down the road and my cooling fan came off my tr7 how is this held on and what would cause it to come free.
it has a clutch fan .
the vechel is a 1980 2 ltre
Answer -
Your clutch fan came off, like the bolts fell out? Or, did you hear a whirr clunk and open your hood to find a neat little rotisserie spit spinning in place of your fan?
The bolts falling out are a typical. Too many mismatched alloy grades to offer uniform fastener grades. Just fell off the shaft? That would be a seized clutch and it eventually split the retainer pin and fell off. On only one occasion, my race car spit off the whole shooting match. Fan, shaft, pulley, water pump drive flange.
I got 22 stitches from that one!

Ether way, if it didn't damage anything you should be fine. Sometimes when the fan goes that far off balance you lose a water pump, but not often. Replace that unit with a Flex-o-lite Flex fan and spacer. It is mechanical and does not use a clutch. It will help the cooling issues associated with the TR7's engine.

Step one, Measure the diameter of your radiator shroud "Place where fan goes" And also measure from the face of the water pump pulley to the edge of the shroud.
The last thing you need to know is how long the fasteners will need to be. Ok, a flex o lite fan is about 1"3/4" thick with diameters available from 14" to 18". You can get spacers that are 1, 2, 4, and 12" long. You must figure, “THESE ARE IN NO WAY THE CORRECT MEASUREMENTS NEEDED TO FIX THIS, JUST AN EXAMPLE” lets say you have a distance of 8" between the pulley face and the lip of the shroud. Optimum placement is to have the base plate of the flex fan flush with the shroud. So, you must go a full 8" to the fan. This will require 2 X 4" spacers and bolts that are 8"3/4" long in a Rockford rating of grade 8 SAE or grade 10.5 Metric. The Grade of bolt is critical to the retention of the fan. If you have any problems implementing this let me know and I will do some leg work for you to get all the stuff you need and all the diagrams MS paint will generate to help put a visual on this. Make sure you make the message private and include your e-mail so I can send pics and such to help with fitment.

Answer
Sure, you can do that. I prefer mechanical because it is one less over engineered part of my car. If you want to have one installed it would be fine. You will have to pick up some a wiring kit and a sensor and a controller. Some heavy gauge cables.... so on and so forth. Decide which one you want and if you have any installation questions, get back to me.
