I don't know what can be done about the smoke.
Sometimes it's something as simple as a partially plugged injector and sometimes it is worse. However; let's try this first. If you were in the USA, I would send you a gallon jug of a product called Marvel Mystery Oil. It has been around for eons and is the last ditch, first grab, and final finale for a lot of vehicles. It goes in petrol and diesel fuel tanks and can be added to engine oil. I usually put a quart into a fuel tank and fill it to capacity. Then add a half a quart to the engine oil. You might have marvel mystery oil in the UK. If you do then you will be all set, if not... you will have to find some other items to use.
Additives that also work are Sea Foam and Lucas engine additives. I would try to find the one that specifies that it can be added to diesel and to motor oil as they typically do a better job of addressing the sludge build up in an engine. So, try some magic sauce and see if that and fresh oil change with good quality oil don't reduce your smoking. If not, more serious tactics may be in order for your engine.
