Volkswagen Repair: 1972 VW - Shifting into reverse, plastic bracket, metal bracket

Question
Before removing the shifter to re-carpet I had to press the shifter down to place in reverse. When I placed the shifter, spring, plastic bracket and metal bracket back,in every possible way, I can place it in reverse now without pressing down. There is no problems with putting or staying in reverse. It goes into reverse smoothly and does not pop out.
Is it a problem not having to press down to get into reverse?
How do I fix this problem?

Answer

Shifter-pedals
Jason,
I think the stop plate (also known as the Reverse Lockout Plate) is installed in the wrong orientation or misadjusted.  The attached picture may help.  Also check out Rob and Dave's web site for detailed procedures.
