Volkswagen Repair: 1986 VW GTI Fuel pump housing replacement, minimal experience, replacement fuel

Question
I am looking into buying the above named vehicle. The current owner told me that it leaks fuel and needs a replacement fuel pump housing. What would i be looking at labor and repair wise, and is it a repair that i may be able to do myself with minimal experience?

Answer
Hi Darron;
A2 GTI's are a blast.  Fuel pump housing?  Where do I find that?  Is that next to the flubber chamber?  Is it maybe next to the flivver valve?  What a joke.
There is a plate, or mounting appliance, that is sort of suspended under the body of the car, in front of the rear axle beam, and it has several hoses that go in a couple of different directions, and it has a fuel pump, and a filter mounted to it.  There is another pump in the tank.
Get a "Bentley's" manual, and look up the instructions for this car you are thinking about buying.  Look at the local library.  Then contemplate what else might have been a fabrication by the seller.
Good luck, Darron.  Hope this helps.
