Volkswagen Repair: 1967 Beetle, spur gear, beetles

I have a newly aquired 1967 Beetle. When it is running it is difficult to get the car in reverse without it grinding the gears badly, any suggestions?

I don't know a lot about the air cooled beetles, but do know this much...the "spur" gear, which serves as the "intermediate" gear for reverse action wears out, and the repair requires the removal of, and rebuild of the transmission.  Might as well rebuild the whole thing once it's out.  Far more efficient time wise, and that way you are certain of what you have, and don't have to guess about it anymore.  Good luck, Jeff.
