Volvo Repair: 1998 C70 Engine Issue, car mechanic, head gasket

Question
mechanic says no compression on cylinder #1--engine missing badly. we have 146,000 miles on what has otherwise been great car. Mechanic says he's "99%" sure it's a problem that can be fixed by re-working the head. (for around $1800). Is it worth the gamble on a car with so many miles on it?

There is a metallic "clink" when the motor is running, and the car has been using a couple of quarts of oil every 3000 miles for over a year. HELP!!

Thanks.

Answer
Thomas, so many miles?  That car is still new.  I guess you havent had a Volvo before. He is correct on the reworking of the head but most likely the head gasket is blown between cylinder 1 and 2. If you are going to spend the money, have the machine shop do a complete valve job and your oil consumption problem will go away.  Its up to you.  If you are going to do it, then oil changes at every 3 thousand is a must.  Roger
