Volvo Repair: Volvo S60 Alarm, clutch linkage, car sheet

Question
I Bought a 2001 Vovo S60T. The remote Fob did not come with it.  When I turn the ignition switch on I hear some clicking nose in the dash but it won't crank. I checked the starter relay under the hood and when the ignition switch turned to start the lead in the relay gets energized but the other lead does not provide the ground in order to close the starter relay.  I can crank it by shorting the starter relay but the engine wont start.  I have fuel presure in the fuel rail, but I don't know if the injectors are firing.  I tryed to lock and unlock the driver door to reset the alarm but it don't help.  can this be caused by the alarm, or I have a computer problem?
Thanks,
Ike.

Answer
Ike,
I assume when you jump across the relay to cause the engine to crank, it is cranking at normal speed? If not, you may have a battery or cable connection problem. If the cranking speed is normal, the engine should start, IF you remembered to turn the ignition switch to the ON position while cranking. You can easily check to see if you are getting current to your spark plugs if you have a timing light. Have an assistant operate the timing light during cranking; if it doesn't light up, you have a problem in the ignition system, probably the ignition switch itself. Now, back to the relay problem- the second wire is not a ground wire. The relay grounds through its bracket attachment to the car sheet metal. You have already determined that the wire from the switch gets current in the START position. Try your test light on the other terminal, as well. You may have a neutral switch failure, which is wired in to the linkage of an auto trans car and the clutch linkage of a manual trans. The current to the relay from the ignition switch goes through the neutral switch.
