Volvo Repair: 2001 Volvo S40 1.9T, joe schmoe, filter belts

Question
I bought my 2001 Volvo S40 last year with only 47,000 miles. I've been taking it to a non-dealer for regular oil changes and latetly I've been told that I should be using synthetic oil.  What do you recommend as I'd like to keep this car for a long time.  Also, after one year of driving 33,000 miles, what type of service do you recommend I have, i.e. fuel filter, belts????  Thank you in advance for your advice.

Answer
Lisa, synthetic is great and lasts longer but the car didnt come with it from the factory.  If you want to switch now, it would take a few changes to get the benefits out of it and you can go 5k between services.  I use  Mobil 1.  30K is a major service.  Oil, coolant, filters, etc.  I suggest a real Volvo shop to do the service.  Joe Schmoe's garage  or Jiffy lube is not a good idea.  Timing belt at 105k is critical to have replaced.  Any other questions let me know.
