Volvo Repair: 1993 940 turbo, crankshaft pulley, interference engine

Question
I was driving and everything was fine.  I heard what sounded like the starter bendix bouncing off the fly wheel.  I turned the car off and when I tried to restart the starter made a horrible noise, and now doesn't turn the engine over at all.  I hopw this is n't the timing belt.  Is my engine one that would cause valve damage if the timing belt breaks?  I will check it to see if it is intact then pull the starter.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Curt

Answer
Hi Kurt,
Sounds like you must do some exploring into engine workings....I'm unsure if you have a interference engine....rotate crankshaft pulley and check to see if it turns rotor in distrib....actually you should be able to tell if a problem exists if crank turns easily.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for good news...like ..the starter went kerphooie.
            Good luck Kurt,
