Volvo Repair: Volvo 240, tailgate hinges, oil leaks

Question
Volvo's have the reputation of durability but at the price of really expensive parts and service.Despite this I believe they are a good make.I'm presently shopping for one.Being an avid DIY person, Which systems do I need to pay particular attention to in a 1990's 245 w/ over 100 k miles?

Answer
Greetings Irving...
240's are not expensive....if you know how to do it...and it really helps a lot...if you do it yourself.
Get excellent price on Volvo parts...on the internet.
 remember...240's were made from 1975 till 1993.
Most interchangeable model car...I know of.

 What to look for?

   Keep an eye out for...
 pitted windshield...
Floor on drivers side area, particulary floor behind drivers seat....lift the carpet up...and look really well.
 oil leaks...wet under the car
  drivers's seat...bent or cushion ie like a valley.....easy fix.
 heater motor problem...v.expensive repair.
dark or black color in tailpipe..
 check sunroof operation...
 leaky steering...rack & pinion unit  needs replace..expensive..
flaky exhaust system rust...or any other flaky rust.
Broken wires that run inside of tailgate hinges...that feeds glass heater...lic. plate light...wiper..on 245's

Lots of oil change stickers is a good sign.
Florida and SW US is good hunting grounds.

Good luck,Irving.
