Volvo Repair: Volvo tappet noise, tappet noise, valve motor

Question
G'day Regis,

I have a 740 - 16 valve (1989 Australian model) and one of the tappets is now making quite a lot of noise (read clattering ferociously). I have been able to limit the noise from the offending tappet over the years with careful use of different oils but it has now finally decided it wants to be heard. The tappets as you probably know are hydraulic.

Now my question is - do I have to take the head with all he fancy headgear off (thanks to the 2 cams and multi valves) and renew all the tappets or is there another easier solution. The car is now in the twilight of its life and like major surgery for a centenarian all the aggravation may just not be worth it.

I just fear you are going to tell me that "yes Joel you are going to have to replace the little offending sausage and you may as well do all the others while you are there". Hmmmmmmmm....that's how many hours and new belts and gaskets and the odd new hose and other assorted parts later.

I still have a pulse so I guess there's still hope - but be gentle on me though mate. Also the old girl may be geriatric but there's still a lot of feeling there.

Cheers,
Joel

Answer
if it were me I would remove all the windows and sunroof if it has one, fill with dirt and the flowers of your choice and water daily.just kidding.I am not a big fan of the 16 valve motor I think it was a waste of time to produce.

you will need to remove the cam top cover and camshafts to replace the noisey lifter.I suppose you could change just one if you knew which one was noisey if not you would need to do them all.I think it is not worth it.I would drive it till it dies.
