Volvo Repair: 84 240 DL power brake booster, power brake booster, bleeder valve

Question
Phil,  I'll do as you suggested.  Thanks.  Can you tell me how to change the belts on my 84 240 DL.  Specifically, how to remove/replace the a/c belt.  Something screeches when I drive, especially when initially starting and revving the engine.  Thanks again.  Kim-------------------------

Phil,  I was told the brake booster needed to be replaced.  The brakes feel a little soft and don't slow the car very quickly.  Do you have time to tell me how to bleed the brakes or can I remove/replace the booster without having to open the fluid system?  Thanks again.  Kim-------------------------

Would you tell me how to replace the power brake booster on my 84 240 DL?  Thank you so much!  KIm

The brake master must first be removed. (Recommend flare line wrenches to remove brake lines ) Then remove the clip and pin at the brake pedal. Then remove the four nuts holding the booster to firewall. Install is reverse procedure. Installing master will require bleeding the master and brake system. If you haven't bled brakes before, recommend bringing to shop to do.

Hardly ever replace boosters, what's wrong with yours?

The symptom you described sounds like just air in the brakes. A bad booster usually will give you a very stiff pedal without any power assist. If you start the car and the pedal drops a little, this usually indicates it's ok.
I would recommend first trying to bleed the brakes first. Starting from the right rear wheel, connect a clear hose to the bleeder with the other end in a clear bottle with brake fluid. Have the hose submerged in the fluid and open the bleeder valve and have someone depress the pedal but only 1/2 way (do not put the pedal to the floor or damage to the master may occur ),do this several times until you see clear fluid going thru line without any air bubbles. You will have to constantly refill the master with fresh fluid during the process. After that wheel go to the left rear , then right front and then the left front wheel. You need only to bleed at the top bleeder. Your pedal should feel firmer afterwards.
If you notice that the pedal goes to the floor on test drive, this means the master has gone bad internally and will need replacing.
Last warning, if the system has not been opened and bled, the screws may be corroded and won't come off. Use a good flare wrench so you don't strip the bleeder screw. May have to soak it with wd-40 or some kind of lubricant.
Good luck!

A/c belt tricky to come off, need to walk it off the pulleys. Nothing to remove, just has to stretch itself off and new one goes on same way. Works best with belt removal tool made by "Lisle". If no tool, need to get rachet and socket to turn over the engine crank bolt by hand and to use screwdriver to guide it off the ac pully .
