Volvo Repair: Starting problems, volvo 740 gl, engine cranks

Question
Hello Phil,
I have starting problems with my Volvo 740 GL from 1988. It has fuel injection.
This is what happens:
The engine cranks when I try to start it, then the engine starts, but dies emidiately. I have discovered that if I am fast and press the gas pedal when the engine starts, it won't die. If on other hand I am not fast enough or whatever it is, it dies and then I have to wait around 15 minutes before I try again. Then it may start or I have to wait longer.
The car runs quite good when it is started. Sometimes the reaction of pressing the pedal can be slow.

The car had some other fuel problems earlier this spring and my brother changed the fuel pumps. It helped in the beginning and the car was very alert when pressing the gas pedal.
The sparking plugs have been checked and are okey.
I hope I have given enough details about the problem.
Thanks in advance

Answer
Under normal condition you do not need to step on gas to start cars with fuel injection. It doesn't pump gas into the car like a carbureted car does. What it does is just open the throttle to allow more air in.
I would recommend check the throttle plate and see if it is gummed up with carbon, which will need to be cleaned out. Then have the idle air valve circuit checked out by auto shop.

Another thing is fuel injected cars need clean injectors to function properly. Recomend using good grade fuel, a good known brand, for example like chevron.
