Volvo Repair: AC Compressor Cycling, ac compressor, sight glass

Question
Sorry - Car is a 1989 240 DL. There is a ground wire hanging from the engine block (other end loose)right next to the compressor. Has an open hole connector on loose end. Can't figure out where it would have come loose from as I don;t thionkg I have unbolted anything in the area. Possible a second bolt on a stud came loose from back of compr. Does this make sense? Where should I connect the wire?

Hi Regis,

Basic problem - Compressor cycling very fast and irregularly.

I have added refrigerant, sight glass is clear (no bubbles). Blows very cold and compr runs consistently for a while, then will start this cycle on/off thing (1 second on, then 1 second off, then on, off,on,off....). sometimes faster than a second.

Here is the kicker - If I reach down and pull up on the compressor (holding it below the recharge port), the compr kicks off. If I push down, it runs and stays on.

Could it be something to do with a ground? ANy chance the system is overcharged? Just guessing. What do you advise?

You have been a great help on troubleshooting these kinds of things. Thanks.

Answer -
you did not mention a year or model.there should be a wire attached to the compressor somewhere that then grounds the compressor to the engine block. I would check that this is tight at both ends.it does not sound like an overcharge situation.I would also check the power wire is securely connected at the compressor.

Answer
it was either bolted to the curved bracket on the back of the compressor that attaches to the slide adjuster on the rear or it was on the slide adjuster 13mm bolt for the rear of compressor.I would bolt it to one of the compressor bolts that hold the curved bracket to the compressor.
