Volvo Repair: alternator tightener rubs against waterpump pulley, 1989 volvo 240, volvo 240

Question
My daughter's 1989 Volvo 240's alternator tightener appears to be rubbing against the pulley on the waterpump.  Is this common, has some adjustment changed, is the adjuster mounted incorrectly?  I don't have any pictures of the area to see if they're not supposed to be that close.  I figure I'll visit a junkyard or stop a 240 driver on the road to view their alternator mount and make comparisons?! Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

Answer
it could be the bushings for the alternator are worn causing the alternator to not fit properly.it could also be the water pump shaft is slipping back towards the engine making the pulley get closer to the engine.I have seen this pulley actually start to rub the timing belt cover.
