BMW: fuel expansion tank in boot - BMW E30, auxillary fuel tank, secondary tank

Hi there Josh,
hope u can help me, im from south africa.
just bought a 1989 e30 325i 4door mint vehicle.
Im planning/doing a big sound installation. Already converted bootlid to gas-shocks, removed torsion bars.

There's a fuel expansion tank in the boot.
its almost the full width of the boot. about 1ft high, and about say 15-20cm in depth.

do i need this? some of my counterparts in england say most of the e30's there never had this?

someone else said its just a safety device?

any help would be helpful. ohyes, the latest ETK/EPC seems to say its a secondary tank..?

 I am in the United States, and we NEVER recieved E30's (or any other BMW for that matter) with an auxillary fuel tank.  IF you have the normal sized fuel tank and this is just and extra tank, then I dont see why you couldn't remove it.  All you would loose is some fuel storage. However since I have never actually seen this myself, I dont know what it looks like and how it's connected to the main tank.  If it's just hoses, then it will be easy.  If it's metal lines then it will be a little more complex.  Also your fuel guage might read differently, as it may think you have  3/4 fuel, when it's actually full (no expansion tank).
