Answer
Tom,
 Sorry for the late reply,

There is also a "idle control module" that looks like a cylinder.  It is about 2-3" diameter and probably 5-6" long.  It will be on or around the intake boot.  This is an electronically controlled valve that allows air to bypass the throttle body and smooths out the idle.  Some times they stick open or closed and cause the idle to be low/high.  remove this and clean it with some carb/choke cleaner.  Make sure the electronic connection is good too.

It seems odd for the engine to have a 3k rpm idle with not vacuum leaks though.  As a final check, remove the boot going to the throttle body and look inside the throttle body.  Make sure that the butterfly is closing almost all the way.  On the 6 cylinder cars there is a 0.020" clearance required.  If it is open more than this, it is likely your problem, as something seems to be bent.

Also there is a temp sensor on the thermostat housing that tells the ECU when the car is at operating temp.  If this sensor is bad, then it can, and usually does cause an increase in idle.  Check the sensor and connection to make sure it works.
That's about all I can think of at the moment.
 Josh.
P.S. When the car is running, listen for any "hissing" sounds as they can be vacuum leaks.  I'm thinking that since your car is already idleing high, you might not notice if the starting fluid is being burned.
