BMW: Starting issues, e30 323i, fuel pump relay

Question
Recently, my clutch went out in my 1985 E30 323i Euro (Bauer TC).

When it finally did, the clutch would not fully disengage (very bad release bearing and broken fingers on pressure plate.)  I was coming home from work in heavy traffic, and had to keep re-starting partially in gear with the starter.

I know this was hard on the starter (high amp draw), but not much I could do at the time.

Anyways, I tore it down (trans removal), replaced all clutch parts, etc.  I disconnected the battery before doing so.

NOW....everything is back in, but when I went to try and start it...the starter does nothing.  I also noticed I have no power windows, blower fan, power mirrors function either.

Did some troubleshooting, and decided to replace the starter....then also the Ignition Switch.

I do hear the fuel pump come on, and some clicking under the hood.

The only thing I can think of is the relay on the drivers side fender well with seven wires running in to it.  I.D. on this relay (Bosch) is:  0 280 230 001.

I believe this is also the fuel pump relay, but believe it does much more than that.

Any suggestions on why the starter won't activate?  Does this relay also act as a "load reduction" relay too (e.g. - cuts out major electrical load devices at start).

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer
Steven,
This is one of those things that you will have to fix yourself, as there are several possibilities.  I had a similar occurance on my car.  There is a small wire that connects to the starter, if you unplug this wire, your windows and fan should work, however the starter will not.  So in order to fix the problem I cleaned all of my grounds and it solved mine.  There is a ground strap on the oil pan (drivers side) that connects to the body.  If this ground strap is not connected well, it could be the problem.

The load reduction relay could be at fault as well, so you will need to check this as well

 Good luck,
