BMW: check engine, bmw reset tool, oil mobil

Question
Mr E.I.,

I have a 1998 740il.  I purchased the car in November 04, with 38k miles on it...garaged!  Anyway, I have swicthed to synthetic oil (Mobil) and have changed the oil two times in 6k miles, because I have read that synthetic oil cleans the motor.  Recently I have noticed a tick during acceleration, however it does no affect performance.  Is this a valve perhaps?  Also as Ive had a local dealer change the oil, the oil service light is in the red, and today the check engine light came on.  Any light you could shine on this would be great.  As for the oil, i was thinking the check engine light came on because the oil has been being changed without the system being reset?

Can I reset the service lights?

Answer
you could have several problems... the oil light can be reset at a jiffy lube or any other oil change place with the bmw reset tool... the click can be a valve but with such few miles i would exepect it to be something more along the lines of the knock sensor or anything but the valves.  The check engine light could be anything from a loose gas cap to a bad 02 sensor... bmw can diagnose that better then anyone as a regular OBD2 computer diagnostics tool will not pull up all the BMW codes.

I would go to BMW and in 1hour of service (about 100 bux) they can tell u what the check engine code is, and also reset your oil. I have a feeling the code has something to do with the tick you hear during acceleration.

Best Wishes,
Emanuel
